Maidstone is the County Town of Kent and as such is situated in the heart of the county. It’s an area that combines the interest of a bustling town life, yet with the joys of the countryside within easy distance, making it easy to understand why Kent is often referred to as the Garden of England.
The River Medway that runs through Maidstone has played an important role in the town’s history. The convenience of the river lead to a variety of different industries evolving here, including a booming brewing industry, a great many paper mills, a significant amount of weaving and dyeing and a famous sweet factory. Such industrial activity brought great deal of wealth to the area. The town centre boasts an historic high street with a host of medieval buildings, whilst nearby Bank Street also has a number of listed buildings, posing as testament to its wealth.
Today Maidstone is still a prosperous town thanks to its role as the business and administration capital of Kent. This brings with it the benefits of a thriving population, complete with great shopping and entertainment and leisure facilities. Its popularity with visitors is further enhanced by the fact that it is only an hour drive away from central London.
