For a fun day out that is free for all the family, take a look at the Maidstone Museum & Art Gallery. Exhibits here include fascinating local archaeological finds, an Egyptian Mummy, a collection of historic Japanese artefacts, as well as an impressive display of Victorian clothes and toys. Whilst the Art Gallery area houses work from British, Dutch and Italian old masters and includes the work of famous local water colourist Albert Goodwin.
The Museum Of Kent Life, Cobtree is well worth visiting whilst in the Maidstone area. Here there a selection of historic buildings that have been carefully rebuilt on site and painstakingly restored for visitors to get a clear idea of what life was like in the past and exactly how people lived. There’s also the opportunity to tour their working farm before relaxing for the afternoon in their popular tearoom.
Just outside Maidstone lies one of the country’s loveliest castles, Leeds Castle. Dating back to 1066, the time of the Norman Conquest, Leeds Castle is picturesquely situated over two small islands that are surrounded by a lake, which in turn is surrounded by an impressive estate. The castle has a very homely feel to it and is packed full of treasures Areas of interest include a formal garden, maze, an aviary and even a dog collar museum. It also enjoys a packed social calendar of events, especially throughout the summer months.
The 14th century Archbishops’ Palace is another popular visitor attraction in Maidstone. This historic building was originally used by the Archbishops’ of Canterbury, who used it as a resting place on their journeys to and from London and Canterbury. The palace is open all year house and adjacent to the palace you’ll also find the very interesting Apothecary’s Garden.
When you have seen the historic points of interest in the area, its time to come right up to date with some state-of-the-art entertainment courtesy of the Lockmeadow Entertainment Centre. This exciting leisure complex comprises of: an eight-screen Odeon cinema, a David Lloyd health club, numerous restaurants and a nightclub. So it’s easy to plan an exciting weekend of packed entertainment all in one place, leaving more time to enjoy life.
